A 52-YEAR-OLD motorist was caught drink-driving when a police national computer check revealed he had no insurance for his Vauxhall Vectra.

Police spotted Janis Strazdins, of Cygnet Court, Spalding, in the town’s Double Street on July 14.

Rebecca Ritson, prosecuting, said he failed a roadside breath test and gave a sample at the police station showing 53 microgrammes of alcohol in breath – the legal limit is 35 mcgs.

Strazdins was banned from driving for 15 months for the excess alcohol offence and fined £150.

He can cut four months off the ban if he completes a rehabilitation course at his own expense.

Magistrates also fined him £100 for driving without insurance. He must pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Strazdins, a line operator with Princes Foods, pleaded guilty to both offences.

Solicitor John McKanna said Strazdins had insurance for two cars and although it was revoked he still thought he was covered for the Vauxhall.

He said: “He had had a drink and he didn’t realise he was over the limit, basically.”
