SUPERDRUG – newly dubbed “the ugliest building in the town centre” – will be asked to put a mosaic on its front wall to mark the Olympic Torch Relay passing through Spalding.
A new Christmas lights scheme has been devised for the town centre and the chamber of commerce is recommending that a festive feature light is used to decorate the Hall Place store.
But speaking at Spalding Town Forum, Coun Lawton said: “Superdrug is the ugliest building in the town centre.
“It is vile.
“Do we have to illuminate the thing.”
No decision was taken on whether to keep Superdrug in the lights scheme, but the shop’s ugly-bug looks put it in line for another decoration.
University Academy Holbeach has created five mosaics to commemorate the Olympic Torch Relay passing through South Holland and the forum was asked to suggest sites.
Coun Roger Gambba-Jones said the blank wall at Superdrug needed something and it could go there.
He said: “It’s a hideous wall that you can’t ignore.”
But Coun Angela Newton told the meeting: “Some people don’t think The South Holland Centre is very pretty. You could put it there.”
Councillors heard the weather-proof mosaic is designed to be mounted on posts.
But forum chairman Coun George Aley said it could be wall-mounted with the right brackets.
The forum agreed on Wednesday to approach Superdrug to see if the company is willing to have the mosaic above its shop front.
A spokesman from Superdrug’s PR company said the store always has Christmas decoration above its shop window every year.
She said Superdrug did not wish to comment on councillors remarks about the shop being the ugliest building in the town centre.
