SPALDING and Holbeach youngsters are putting their summer holidays to good use by serving the community.

Around 20 youngsters have signed up to the National Citizen Service (NCS), a Government scheme for 16 and 17-year-olds who give up four weeks of their time to volunteer for community projects.

Youngsters spent the first week working on team-building skills and the second week living away from home on a university campus.

Lead mentor Dave Blenkinship said: “About 600 young people in Lincolnshire are involved in NCS and the Spalding group are volunteering some of their free time for the community.

“They have been developing team-building and social development skills, but now they are learning about social action.”

This week, the youngsters are planning a charity fashion show which takes place at Spalding Youth Centre in Westlode Street next Friday August 17 from 6pm until 8pm.

Proceeds will go to Cancer Research and other local charities.

The group are also planning to spend all of next week building a mini crazy golf course for residents at Fulney Hall Day Care Centre in Spalding.

Mr Blenkinship said: “It’s quite a big project they are taking on, but they can do it.”

Entry to the fashion show is £2.50 and businesses interested in hiring a stall for £5 or anyone who can help in building the golf course should contact Dave Blenkinship on 07775 612590.
