A medal has been returned to Long Sutton & District Agricultural Society after 141 years.

Members and guests at the society’s 67th annual dinner at Whaplode Manor at Saracen’s Head heard that the medal had been awarded in 1874 for the best crop of Mangold Wurzels – also known as mangold, mangel beet, field beet and fodder beet.

Past president Mark Rose, reporting on events of the past year, said the medal had been found in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada, among the possessions of the late Mrs Florence Stacey (formerly Reading) who had been born in Walsall.

Her family had kindly donated the medal to the society.
