A Spalding man is warning people to be on guard after he was twice contacted on his X-directory landline by scammers keen to access his computer.
Aaron Woods (64) said the first call last week was from a male hoaxer claiming to be from Microsoft – and the second call this week came from a woman who said she was from communications company TalkTalk.
Mr Woods said the woman who claimed to be from TalkTalk was calling from a big office, because he could hear lots of voices in the background, and she cut off the call when he challenged her with his own security question by asking her to recite his mobile phone number.
“I would have liked to have kept her on the line longer,” said Mr Woods. “I would have told her ‘you have got an appointment with Her Majesty’s prison service this Christmas’ and I would have told her straight.”
He was equally blunt with the man pretending to be from Microsoft.
“I said ‘right, I am telling you straight, I am not downloading anything to my laptop and I am reporting this telephone call to the police’.
“I think somebody’s selling off telephone numbers for money.”
Mr Woods says Microsoft and TalkTalk don’t ring people and he believes the calls were part of a pre-Christmas scam to obtain his bank details.
He has reported both incidents to the police and contacted the Spalding Guardian because he wants other residents to be on their guard.
