Could railway bridge finally be lit?

THERE could be light at the end of the tunnel to make a Spalding railway bridge safer at night.

Poor lighting at Steppingstone Bridge means the well-used footpath between Park Road and King’s Road is plunged into darkness at night, leading to concerns about users’ safety.

South Holland district councillor Roger Gambba-Jones has been calling for better lighting to be provided for some time and he is hoping his wish will finally come true after hearing the path is due to be closed for 11 days while essential maintenance work is carried out.

He said: “I don’t know for sure but I believe they are going to improve the lighting.

“It fits in with a timescale I had been informed of, so I am putting two and two together and hoping I’m right.”

The work was due to start yesterday.

Coun Gambba-Jones added: “If that is the case I am very pleased about it and I will be even more pleased if the end result is effective.

“Good lighting is important on the bridge because at the moment it can be scary to cross in the dark.

“Until now there has only been one very high lamppost at one end of the bridge which is supposed to cast enough light to light up the whole thing, but it doesn’t and casts some very deep shadows.

“It is important that people feel safe and that they can see who else is on the bridge.

“I have been told the lighting will be better positioned, so hopefully that will improve it greatly.”
