A family swapped birthday presents for money to support the neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) where their son was born, as a way of giving a very special thank you to it fantastic staff.

Relatives of Becky and Martin Harding, pictured above with son Leo, were inspired to raise funds for the unit by the care Leo received after his birth in January last year.

Shortly after he was born, Leo was admitted to the unit after being diagnosed with Down’s syndrome. He spent more than three weeks in hospital, initially at the QEH before being transferred to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Becky’s sister and father asked for donations to the unit instead of gifts for their birthdays last summer and raised some £500. Mr and Mrs Harding, of Long Sutton, said: “A big thank you to the team at NICU for everything they did for Leo, and for enabling us to take our baby home.”

Neo-natal community sister Sharon Riches said: “With this donation and the help of others we have been able to transform our parents rooms, from clinical to colourful, adding woodland inspired wall decals and patchwork quilts.”
