GUARDIAN ANGEL: The latest news from our girl about town
There was a bit of a flap in Greggs on Monday lunchtime when a pigeon flew into the shop ... and then twice tried to get out through the plate glass window.
But then the bird whisperer, or was it Wonder Woman, appeared out of nowhere, took off her very smart coat and used it to gently capture the pigeon and released it outside.
Angel quickly negotiated a free coffee for Wonder Woman but the rescuer quickly melted into the throng outside without hearing her praises being sung by customers and staff alike.
If the bird whisperer is reading this, thank you, and Angel hopes your coat didn’t suffer in the rescue.
* Angel joined a Guardian reporter as he paid his first-ever visit to West Ham United and watched football at a stadium that is set for the bulldozers later this year.
A drive through the rain along the A16, A47, A1 and M11 brought the reporter and his claret and blue-supporting host to The Boleyn Ground, nicknamed the Academy of Football, in east London.
Despite heavy rain, the pair helped themselves to a bacon and sausage baguette and double cheeseburger respectively, which turned out to be the highlight of the day.
The football match itself was totally forgettable, but that wasn’t the point as one half of the pair saw his beloved team win, while the other was just glad for the experience of saying “I’ve been to Upton Park”.
All that was left was for Angel to “blow bubbles” with them on the way back to Spalding.
* Meanwhile, it’s the end of an era this Saturday when John and Jean Wellband shut up shop for the final time after nearly 50 years at Welec in New Road, Spalding, and Angel wishes the pair a very happy retirement.
