9PM UPDATE: QUICK-thinking tractor driver Justin Thompson, who drove on the opposite side of the road to block traffic from a blazing crane yesterday afternoon, has just sent us this picture.
The road has been open today but Free Press reader Richard Barnett posted on our Facebook page a minute ago: “It’s been causing mayhem all day.”
4PM: DIVERSIONS are still in place to ease traffic flow on the A17 at Sutton Bridge following the mobile crane fire that closed the road.
A spokesman for Lincolnshire County Council highways department said traffic can now flow freely into Lincolnshire from Norfolk.
If travelling towards Norfolk, motorists will be diverted at Long Sutton on to the A1101 Wisbech road and then the A47.
However, motorists will not be able to get across Cross Keys Bridge eastbound.
Norfolk and Lincolnshire firefighters were called to Centenary Way, which is near the village’s power station, at 3.30pm yesterday.
Police closed the A17 in both directions amid fears a fuel tank could explode, but traffic lights were put in place at 10.30pm last night.
