A SUCCESSFUL chilled distribution company based at Bicker Bar has been bought by one of the UK’s largest haulage companies.

Browns Chilled Distribution, which has an annual turnover of £35million, was bought by Turners (Soham) Ltd earlier this month.

The Bicker business was owned by Simon and Andrew Brown and includes the former David Andrew Transport business.

It is based on a 27-acre site and operates 120 vehicles.

The business includes distribution to supermarkets, food processors and wholesale markets.

Its sale adds to Turners’ strength in the Spalding area, where it already has a refrigerated transport depot at Quadring and the former Fruitex wholesale market operation at Donington.

A spokesman for Turners said the storage and cross-docking facilities at Browns will enable the company to expand its activities in the local area while strengthening its position nationally in the refrigerated transport sector.

Managing director Paul Day said: “Browns has developed its business by providing excellent service to its customers and we are excited by the opportunities this purchase presents for the group.

“We are committed to driving this business forward and maintaining the traditions of this successful family-owned business.”

Turners, started in 1930 in Soham, Cambridgeshire, employs more than 2,000 staff, operates more than 1,000 vehicles and 1,400 trailers from 32 locations.
