Pupils and staff at schools across South Holland will be hoping to continue the area’s success in a countywide energy-saving competition.

The Lincolnshire Schools Switch Off Challenge, won in 2014 by St Paul’s Community Primary School in Spalding, takes place on Thursday, July 7, when schools throughout Lincolnshire will look to switch off all non-essential lights and electrical items for the day.

St Paul’s managed to make a huge saving of 85 per cent on their use of electricity and, after their win, headteacher Kira Nicholls said: “We calculated that if all schools in Lincolnshire saved the same amount of energy as St Paul’s, the county would have saved over £4,000 in only one day.“

Lincolnshire County Council’s SCoRE (Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency) team are behind the competition and SCoRE project officer Sarah Rouse said: “The Switch Off Challenge is a great way to get pupils thinking about how they use energy and the changes they can make both at school and home.”
