Villagers fear a child will die on dangerous road

A villager fears a child could be killed after he was forced to jump to safety after a tractor mounted the kerb and narrowly missed him as he walked along the footpath,

Rob Lamb said the problem of agricultural vehicles and HGVs trying to pass in Roman Bank, Moulton Seas End, is a serious problem, which could have tragic consequences unless urgently addressed.

Mr Lamb made his comments at a public forum held ahead of Moulton Parish Council meeting last week. He was joined by other villagers who support his call for something to be done.

He said: “It’s a deathtrap down there. Children should be able to play outside, but I really think someone will be killed.

“I was forced off the pavement by a tractor which mounted the kerb. They have to mount the kerb all the time to pass each other.

“The road is just unsuitable for HGVs and agricultural traffic, but there is also a problems of cars speeding in the 30mph limit.

“The road is very narrow at the top end and a lot of families with children live nearby.”

Mr Lamb and his wife were quick to add that their complaints were not a dig at local companies’ whose vehicle use the road, as they said the village embraces the success of businesses based nearby.

But they called on the parish council to call for a traffic assessment to be carried out as a matter or urgency with a view to introducing calming measures such as chicanes to deter large vehicles from using it as a cut-through and slow other cars down.

Council chairman Andrew Woolf said: “We all agree there’s a problem, we take your comments on board and we will ask what can be done.”
