Young singers from University Academy Holbeach brought the Dickens of a harvest celebration to residents of Hovenden House, Fleet.

The academy’s chamber choir arrived along with a donation of goodies from the school’s harvest assembly and sang a medley of songs to do with Charles Dickens.

They were part of the school’s annual distribution of fruit, vegetables and tasty food of all kinds donated by pupils’ families.

Academy head of music Samantha Graper said: “The chamber choir sang at the harvest assembly and were in good voice for Hovenden House.

“There are just 16 in the choir aged from 11 to 16 – they have to go through auditions and learn to read music as well as attend a practice every week. They’ve been going for five years along with the school’s four other choirs and have reached a very high standard indeed.”

People living in and around Holbeach will have the chance to judge for themselves the quality of singing as the Academy Chamber Choir is singing Dickens at the 200th anniversary of Moulton Chapel Methodist Church this Friday.

The great Victorian author’s bi-centenary happens to fall in the same year, deciding the programme for the Church’s celebration concert.

Apart from the school choir’s performance of songs from musicals Oliver! and Smike and other Dickens-related material, there will be readings by members of the congregation.

Tickets are available on the door at £4 a head and the concert starts at 7.30pm.
