PUPILS as young as 13 at Donington’s Thomas Cowley High School are encouraged to start thinking what career they’ll take.
For career, substitute careers, for head teacher of the newly-made academy Martyn Taylor insists that anyone leaving school in the 21st century is likely to have a number of jobs in their lifetime.
Students in years nine, ten and 11 all attended the school’s careers fair last week already primed to look for a direction beyond school so they can choose appropriate courses all the way through.
Mr Taylor said: “The IMF forecasts aren’t good for the next few years and we in school can’t do anything about government policy or future growth.
“What we can do, as with the careers fair, is to make sure students get impartial advice and guidance.
“They need to see there are lots of opportunities out there for young people with qualifications who look presentable, are willing to work hard and are ready to get into the work market and give a good account of themselves.
“The bottom line imperative for us is to ensure they leave here with the best qualifications - especially in English and Maths - because it’s a very competitive world out there.
“Pupils in year eight are already making choices about their future progression.
“They need to be flexible and open - it’s unlikely they’ll have only one job all their lives.”
