Friday, 11.30am: Police say they have traced a woman who they believed could be an important witness to a robbery at a Spalding building society. The woman was in the Norwich and Peterborough asking to change Euros shortly before a man confronted staff and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police say she has now been identified, but they are still appealing for anyone with information about the robbery to contact them.

Thursday, 2.15pm: Extra police have been drafted in to search for the man who robbed a Spalding building society yesterday.

Officers are focusing their search on the distinctive red and black, three-quarter length jacket worn by the man who fled with cash from the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society in Sheep Market.

Sgt Stuart Hurst said: “Someone must know the owner of the coat because it is so distinctive or have seen the robber wearing it at the time of the robbery.

“We would urge them to get in touch with us.

“This was a terrifying ordeal for the people in the building society. The person responsible must be brought to justice.”

The jacket is red with a black panel across the shoulders, has a V-shaped hemline on the back and a logo on the collar.

• Witnesses are asked to call police on 101.

Thursday, 8.30am: Police are hunting a man who robbed a Spalding building society yesterday teatime.

No weapon was used, but the man kept one of his hands hidden as he confronted staff at the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society in Sheep Market and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

A police spokesman said: “Staff were shaken by the incident but nobody was injured.”

The man is described as having an English accent, of average build and about 6ft 2in tall with light blond hair.

He wore jeans, a baseball cap, a jacket and had a scarf around his face.

Police are also trying to trace a woman who was in the branch asking to change Euros shortly before the incident, which happened just before 5pm, because she may be an important witness.

Building society press spokesman Alison Rolls said there were two members of staff in the banking hall at the time.

She said: “Obviously we are helping the police as much as possible and hope that whoever is responsible is found very quickly.

“Nobody was hurt but obviously it is a very distressing incident and the staff were shaken.

“There were no customers, thankfully, in the branch at the time.”

• Police have issued images of the robbery suspect and the woman witness and say better quality CCTV pictures will be available later.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101.
