A teenager is lucky to be alive after his car left the road and ploughed through two gardens, demolishing fences, a brick wall and hitting two parked cars.

One resident heard what sounded like an explosion as 19-year-old Nick Grimer crashed his Honda Civic and left a trail of destruction.

He flattened one fence, hit a parked kit car in one garden – shooting that car through the fence into the neighbouring garden – crashed through the fence himself, hit the wall and then a Rover.

The teenager, from Langwith Gardens, Holbeach, went to hospital with bumps, bruises and cuts.

The accident happened shortly before 7.50am as Mr Grimer was driving along the A151 between Holbeach and Whaplode to work at Moulton Bulb Company.

Retired teacher Stephen Walker, whose Rover was damaged, said: “I was in the kitchen at the time I heard the explosion and came out here.

“The important thing is that the lad’s all right. It could have been worse.”

Surveying the wrecked cars, Mr Walker said: “At the end of the day, these are pieces of metal that can be replaced. He’s only got cuts and bruises and that’s what’s important.”

The Walkers took the teenager in, called police and an ambulance, and Mr Grimer called his parents who attended the accident scene.

The teenager’s dad, Stephen, said: “I am surprised he’s in as good nick as he is. I think that’s what the police have said as well.”

David Goddard spent hours on his labour of love, building the MGTF kit car, which he says is a write off but could have saved the teenager’s life.

He said: “I think it dampened the crash.”

nScores of accidents on the A151 led to traffic calming and lowering of speed limits.

Mr Walker said: “The road is a nightmare.

“It’s supposed to be 50mph here but not many people obey that.”
