Moulton Chapel Methodist Church has a big claim to fame with two 100-year-olds attending its weekly services.
Add their ages together and centenarians Jack Butters and Agnes Thorpe have lived as long as there has been a place of worship on the village’s Fengate site.
And that made them the perfect choice to cut the iced celebration cake when the church celebrated its bicentenary.
Church secretary John Behoo said it’s the first time in the whole of the district so far as he knows that any church has had two centenarians in its congregation.
He said: “Our district runs from South Yorkshire down to the borders of Cambridgeshire.
“We have two people collectively as old as the church and that’s why we had them cut the cake.” He said Jack is very active and walks to church as he lives within about 150 metres.
Agnes, who uses a wheelchair, has a lift to church with her daughter-in-law, Anne Thorpe.
A special service to mark the church’s 200th anniversary was led by the Rev Jennifer Park, who recently retired from the South Holland Circuit where she was superintendent minister for many years.
She was assisted by the Rev Alan Barker, the present superintendent minister, the Rev Margaret Mwailu, and the Rev David Curran. Mr Behoo said more than 100 people attended the service, which proved a tight squeeze in the small church.
Bicentenary celebrations included special coffee mornings, a Dickensian lunch and visits from local choirs.
