A Spalding Grammar School student will sport a blue hairdo to raise money for Sue Ryder.
Mitchell Staff (16) decided to go blue because that’s the official colour of the charity who cared for his late grandad, John Staff, who died aged 73 at Thorpe Hall Hospice, Peterborough, in 2010.
Mitchell aims to have his hair dyed on March 18.
“It’s semi-permanent and it will last two to four weeks,” said Mitchell. “My school is OK with it and the vast majority of my sponsorship so far has come from school friends and the staff.”
He has already beaten his original target of £500, raising about £600, but would be happy to have more for a charity so close to his heart.
Speaking about the hospice, Mitchell said: “They were always there in a time when they were needed most. I will be ever thankful of the care they provided and this is my way to give something small back to a charity that’s extremely close to my heart.”
Mitchell, who lives in Crowland, said he was really close to his grandad, a Norwich City fan, and enjoyed listening to his stories from the Army.
Inspired by his grandad and the care he received from the hospice, Sue Ryder was an obvious choice when Mitchell began working towards his Duke of Edinburgh Award and he’s been volunteering with the charity for a couple of years now.
The Year 12 pupil is studying law, economics and geography and hopes to study law at university once he has completed his A-levels.
Mitchell, who has a sister Lauren (24), lives with his parents, Alison and Glen, who are proud of his fundraising – as is his nan, John’s widow, Valerie.
He says: “Nan has been helping me fundraise a little bit.”
