Ofsted success for school

Children and staff at Shepeau Stow Primary School are celebrating the results of an inspection by education chiefs after it was rated good in all areas.

Strong leadership, rising educational standards and good behaviour by pupils were some of the plaudits given to the school after a visit by Ofsted inspectors last month.

The school was rated good in areas including leadership and management, pupils’ achievement, quality of teaching and pupils’ behaviour and safety.

It marks a significant improvement for the school which was judged only satisfactory after a previous inspection in June 2010.

The Ofsted report said strong leadership from headteacher Alison Buddle had resulted in “better teaching and learning since the last inspection,” with pupils of all ages making good progress because they were “well taught” and “keen to do well.”

High standards of work and behaviour were expected by teachers, pupils’ lessons included “interesting and demanding activities” and strong support from the local education authority had helped the school to improve.

The report said: “Strong leadership has been central to the school’s improvement and the success gained so far in improving teaching and learning shows that it is well placed to continue to improve.

“Pupils’ progress in English and mathematics is good, while improved teaching is ironing out earlier dips in a few pupils’ progress and successfully closing the gap in standards.

However, the report highlighted some “inconsistencies in teaching” which meant pupils were sometimes not given enough guidance on how to improve their work.

Concerns were also raised about limited opportunities for pupils to use mathematical skills in different subjects and a lack of understanding about internet safety.

Mrs Buddle said: “We are very pleased to be graded as good in all areas as it reflects the hard work of everybody involved in the school.

“I have a very strong team of staff who have worked very hard over the last few years, supportive parents and governors who are all extremely pleased that our efforts have been recognised.

Chairman of governors David Goose said: “The excellent work by the headteacher and her staff, good support from parents and very good behaviour and effort from our children has put the school in a good place.”
