Villagers will be able to have their say on plans to build a biomass plant when a public meeting is held on the issue this week.

Sutton Bridge parish councillors Jenny Rowe and Vicky Hills have agreed to hold a public meeting to fight against the £300m project for the Wingland Enterprise Park.

As previously reported, EnergyPark Sutton Bridge (ESPB) has applied to build a 48mw renewable power station.

The meeting, which could include a proposal to hold a referendum, will be held on Friday, at the Royal British Legion, Gas House Lane, from 7pm.

More than 30 villagers crowded into a small office to speak at an extraordinary meeting of the Sutton Bridge parish council last Tuesday.

Members were left baffled by a rogue leaflet which advertised the meeting and was distributed around the village. Speaking after the meeting, Mrs Rowe and Mrs Hills called on residents to write to energy minister and South Holland MP John Hayes in a bid to get the application called in.

Mrs Hills said: “I would urge people to send letters to the energy minister. People need to be proactive and do whatever they can. It is understandable that so many people came.”

Mrs Rowe said: “People from the surrounding area can come.

“Twenty lorries are supposed to be carrying ash from here to Peterborough. They will be going through Sutton St James.”

During Tuesday’s meeting, concerned residents demanded a chance to have their say and to form an action group.

Resident Stanley Lay said: “We have to get a campaign for the village to get behind. We need an action group.”

The council came under fire for not “informing” residents of both the scheme and the extraordinary meeting.

But Coun Michael Booth said: “This parish council has done what you have asked. We have said no.”

And chairman John Grimwood insisted that the authority had nothing to do with the leaflet.
