Cash bonanza for school to become academy

An extra £670,000 for students could be the reward if Spalding Grammar School becomes an academy, its headteacher has claimed.

Nigel Ryan confirmed that staff, students and parents had been informed of the school’s plan to convert to academy status on February 1 2013 after governors gave the go-ahead last week.

The move would see the school freed from local authority control and funded directly by the Government, but Mr Ryan said no changes would be made to school hours, uniform and admissions policy, staff pay and the curriculum.

He said: “We’ve been looking at converting to academy status ever since the Government came in two years ago and we’ve had a committee of governors finding out what all the issues are from our perspective and trying to assess whether we’re in a position to make an appropriate decision.

“in terms of how the school runs, we’re not looking to change things at all but as an academy, we’ll have more money to spend on things to help our students.”

In a letter to parents, the school confirmed it was in line to receive an extra £260,000 in the current academic year and £410,000 in 2013-14 if it became an academy.

Chairman of governors, Reverend John Bennett, said: “We made the decision to apply for academy status because we believe this step is necessary to ensure a stronger financial base for the future.”
