Residents from a Spalding housing estate are fighting plans to build on land they believe has been set aside as green space.
About 70 people have signed a petition against plans to build a three-bedroom detached house in Rainton Court on land sold off at a public auction in July.
Residents claim when the estate was built almost 40 years ago, developers were under a condition to leave several areas of land for use as play and tree planting spaces.
Petition organiser Jean Bradshaw, of Hemsley Way, said: “When the estate was built, it was stipulated by the planning authority that landscaping and green areas had to be left on it.
“People bought their houses here because of these areas, so they don’t want a house there that will look like a lump of bricks stuck on the edge of a large cake.”
The petition has been backed by letters to South Holland District Council from Spalding and District Civic Society, district councillor David Ashby and John Hayes, MP for South Holland and The Deepings.
Mr Hayes’ letter said: “I am extremely alarmed that permisssion may be given for a property to be built on this area.
“Surely the council cannot consider such an application which will remove a green area used and enjoyed by local residents.”
Jennie Wenman from Weston Design Ltd in Weston Hills, representing the applicant, said: “Our client is exploring all potential uses of the land and submitting a planning application for residential use is part of this process.”
