Leaflet plea to solve accident

Five hundred leaflets have been handed to drivers appealing for witnesses to help police find out what caused the head-on collision in which a 52-year-old Swineshead man died.

On Tuesday around 7.53pm, exactly a week after the Volkwagen Polo in which Keith Robert Tyler was travelling collided with a Volvo, police were stopping vehicles along the A16 at Crowland, near the scene of the accident.

Six officers joined Nigel Gascoigne of the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership’s collision investigation team on the roadside to make sure the operation was conducted safely in the hope someone would have the vital information they needed.

Mr Gascoigne said: “Already a lot of witnesses have come forward - perhaps more than normal. But if we can get one extra witness to help us get the full picture it will be worthwhile.”

The leaflets, which give the time and location of the accident, ask, ‘Were you on this road last Tuesday about this time?’ and give details of the cars involved - a blue Polo, a grey Volvo XC90 and a white Daf articulated goods vehicle.

When the accident happened Mr Tyler, of North End, received treatment from air ambulance Magpas and the East Midlands Ambulance Service, but crews were unable to save him.

The driver of the Polo, a 55-year-old man from Stickney, was taken to hospital to receive treatment for fractures.

A 39-year-old man from Donington, who was driving the Volvo, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on police bail until January 11.

Police appeals for witnesses by stopping cars and handing out leaflets to drivers are not unusual.

Mr Gascoigne said: “We find a lot of people travel the same route, on the same day at the same time, so we often hand out leaflets a week after an accident in the hope it will trigger someone’s memory. We want to make sure we don’t miss anyone.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Mr Gasgoigne on 01522 558855.
