A neighbour detained a woman drink-driver until police arrived when she was almost double the legal limit.

The neighbour, Curtis Berrow, had followed Sally Mason (46) from Swan Street, Spalding, to her home in the town’s Woodrow Place after she had been drinking at The Station Gates pub, prosecutor Jim Clare told magistrates.

As Mason got out of her Honda Jazz on November 10, Mr Berrow called police and detained her until they arrived.

Mr Clare said Mason had 68 microgrammes of alcohol in breath – the legal limit is 35.

Mason admitted during her interview that she had been drinking at the pub.

Mason (46) was banned from driving for 18 months, fined £300 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

She can cut the ban by four months if she completes a rehabilitation course.

Mason, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

Solicitor Rachel Stevens, mitigating, said it wasn’t Mason’s intention to have a drink that day but she knew the landlady at The Station Gates.

“Her friend bought her a drink and she had a couple more,” said Miss Stevens. “She holds her hands up on this occasion and has made a clear mistake.”

Miss Stevens said Mason had worked for the same employer since she was 17.

She had a number of health problems and, added to that, she will now have to cycle to work.
