Online retailers in Spalding are bracing themselves to take a slice of the millions of pounds expected to be spent in the next few hours during the the annual pre-Christmas shopping spree dubbed Cyber Monday.

Nationally MEGA MONDAY got off to a flying start amid predictions that a record £465-million will have been spent online by midnight.

One of Spalding’s online businesses says it has been enjoying an upturn in trade on the first Monday of December for the last few years.

Michael Strutt, owner of Penman Clock Care in Pied Calf Yard, sells designer watches, clocks and giftware online at www.antique-clockrepairs.co.uk

He said: “We’ve been on the internet for eight years and we’ve noticed that on the first Monday in December there has been a sudden surge of orders.

“We couldn’t carry the range of stock we have in our shop if it wasn’t for our online business.

“I think if you are not doing e-commerce you are missing a trick.

“Years ago there were shops on the high street that had been there for generations but the world of retail changes and you have to change with it to survive.”

Sabina Dungarwalla, of www.GiftsOnLine4u.com which is one of the Spalding Guardian’s shortlisted businesses in the Business Accelerators campaign, is also ready for any orders that come her way.

She said: “We are hoping to be busy. Last year we sold a lot of things other people did but this season we have a number of original gift collections that are already proving popular.”
