A Crowland man who grew his own supplies of cannabis escaped a jail sentence when he appeared at Lincoln Crown Court today (Mon).

Ian Gilbert was arrested after police visited his home in the early hours of 12 March and found the 28 plants.

Chris Geeson, prosecuting, said that 20 of the plants were either dead or dying with only eight capable of producing any yield.

Mr Greeson said “The majority of the cannabis material was leaves and stalks rather than the more significant flowering heads.

“The plants that were viable were all three to four weeks old.”

Gilbert was interviewed and admitted he was responsible for growing the plants. He said he was smoking 15 joints a day.

Gilbert (42), of Glebe Gardens, Crowland, admitted cultivating cannabis on March 12. He was given a community order with six months supervision.

Judge Michael Heath said he had taken into account evidence of medical problems suffered by Gilbert but told him “I’m dealing with you in a lenient way on this occasion but what you were doing is unlawful. Do it again and you could very well go inside.”

Charlie Falk, defending, said Gilbert is currently receiving disability living allowance and was unable to perform any heavy work which could rule him out from receiving an unpaid work order.
