Children in Long Sutton had an extra off when a water main burst closing their school and affecting 250 homes in the town.

Mum Danielle Speadman said she found out Long Sutton Primary School was not open on Tuesday when she tried to take her three-year-old son, Jack, to nursery.

Danielle (28) said: “Luckily, my husband works shifts so he was able to look after the children, but it’s been a nightmare since Sunday.”

She said there was no water at her house in John Swains Way for two hours on Sunday, but it came back on again.

But the family had been without heat since then because they thought the loss of water pressure had affected the heating system.

In addition to having no heating, Danielle said on Tuesday morning they woke up to no water again. She said: “I have a 20-month-old girl, Maddison, too, and with two young children it has been really hard.”

Plumbers were fixing the heating problem on Tuesday afternoon as most homes in Long Sutton were getting their water supplies back. The primary school was back open yesterday (Wednesday).

Antony Innes, of Anglian Water, said: “We are very sorry for the current loss of water in the Long Sutton area. This has been caused by problems with a water main which burst on Sunday and again on Tuesday morning.

“We know this must be frustrating and disruptive for people and our engineers worked hard to fix the problem.

“Engineers were on site throughout the weekend and were back again on Tuesday.

“We did everything we could to get customers back on water as quickly as possible.”

Mr Innes said around 250 properties were affected following the burst at about 5.30am on Tuesday morning.

He said: “Many of these had their supplies restored by lunchtime, with water either channelled through an alternative route or through temporary overground pipes.

“Once repairs are complete we will look to see if there is any additional work we can do to reduce the chances of future problems on this section of pipe.”
