Gas leak forces temporary closure of school

BREAKING NEWS: Students at The Deepings School are having an unexpected day off after a gas leak forced senior staff to cancel lessons today.

Gas engineers are currently on site at the Deeping St James school trying to isolate the leak that has left the majority of classrooms without heating.

The leak was first detected at 4pm on Thursday when senior staff were advised that it was unsafe for the school’s 1,450 students to be on site while remedial work took place.

Headteacher Chris Beckett confirmed that work was ongoing today to solve the problem and engineers would remain on site over the weekend, if necessary, to ensure the leak was prepared in time for the school to reopen on Monday.

“We have a gas leak which we’re obviously trying to isolate and investigate, with a view to sorting it out,” Mr Beckett said.

“As a result, we’ve had to close down the vast majority of our boilers that operate the school’s heating system.

“We didn’t know about it until yesterday at 4pm, then we waited on advice and made the decision that because remedial work couldn’t be carried out until today, it wasn’t safe to have students in while that work is being done.

“Hopefully, we’ll know during the course of today exactly where the leak is and we’re hoping that it will be remedied over the course of the weekend so that we’ll be able to reopen on Monday.”
