A Hanthorpe man described as “one of a dying breed” has been recognised in the New Year Honours list for his services to the community.

Ernest Edmond Wyer (80) is being awarded a BEM for the work he has done in Morton and Hanthorpe.

Former parish councillor Mr Wyer, of Edenham Road, was nominated by Tina Barnatt, a member of the village hall committee.

She said: “Ernest is a real village character - one of a dying breed. Over the years he has willingly done so much for the village, especially with the upkeep of the hall, we thought it was time it was recognised.”

Mr Wyer, a retired joiner, said: “I was really surprised. It’s not just me - we have probably the best community spirit in the country. When things need doing, you just get on and do it.”

As well as serving 20 years on the Morton and Hanthorpe Parish Council, Mr Wyer is a bellringer at St John The Baptist Church and helps organise the annual village street fair.

He and wife, Heather, will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in the New Year.
