Trolleys, tyres and traffic lights dredged up from channel mud

SHOPPING trolleys, tyres, televisions and traffic lights were among the trash trawled out of Spalding’s Coronation Channel.

The mangled heap was dredged from the bottom of the channel by Spalding Water Taxi pilots as part of a pre-season clean to ensure the rivers look their best for visitors.

The pilots pick up what they can using grabbers on board the water taxis and then hire another boat and specialist equipment to bring in the rest.

It is now hoped that they can turn their attention to the second part of the route along the River Welland while water levels are still low in readiness for the water taxis to start running on Good Friday, April 6.

One of the pilots involved in the operation said: “It always amazes me what we find in there. Anything that can be thrown in, usually is.

“In the six years we have been doing it we have probably pulled out about 30 shopping trolleys and at least two set of traffic lights and endless traffic cones.

“There’s probably enough in there each time to fill a skip.”
