Former RAC man calls for lower speeds

A former RAC patrol man is urging the county council to cut speed limits on damaged B roads following a crash between two vans.

Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter drivers were treated and discharged from Peterborough City Hospital following Friday afternoon’s accident on Postland Road, Crowland, near to the drain bridge on the B1166.

Terry Seal, who comes from Gedney Hill, said: “The look of the vehicles gave me the impression it was a ‘fatal’. I was amazed they got out of that. It looked horrendous.”

Mr Seal says the road has a 60mph limit, but its surface is rutted and uneven.

He said: “If the county council haven’t got the money for repairing the roads, I think they should impose a 40mph limit where these roads are unsafe.”

Mr Seal and a passing van driver organised an unofficial diversion because it was awkward for drivers who were having to double-back 500 metres when they reached the police cordon.

County senior highways officer Maxine Stukins said many rural roads are built on silty soil, which rises and falls with the water table causing roads to crack, and it’s drought damage rather than damage from HGVs.

She said: “We do put up signs to make road users aware of the conditions.”
