More than 1.6 million tonnes of potatoes weighing the same as 4,000 jumbo jets are made into chips every year in the UK – and many of those potatoes are grown in south Lincolnshire.

The role of the humble spud – in its form as a chip – is being highlighted this week, Chip Week 2013.

Britain’s ongoing love affair with chips means we enjoy them in nearly three billion meals every year without a thought for the land where they are grown. The land required to grow potatoes for chips is 33,664 hectares, an area equivalent to 47,000 Wembley football pitches, to produce nearly three billion meals containing chips!
