Spalding Flower Queen hopeful Kelly Ward can still remember listening to her grandmother tell stories of when she was the first Miss Tulipland.
Kelly (27), of Green Lane, said: “I miss my nan every day - especially the stories she used to tell.
“If I won it would be an amazing story to tell my own grandchildren - that my grandmother was the first flower queen and I was the last.”
Her grandmother was called Joan Roberts when she was Miss Tulipland in 1950, but later married and took the surname Dalton.
Always hoping to follow in her footsteps, Kelly entered the Flower Queen competition four years ago. She said: “I thought I’d have another go - especially because this is the last parade.”
She is not the only member of the family dreaming of taking part in the parade. Her stepdaughter Courtney is entering the competition to be Princess.
Former Gleed School student Kelly said: “We are both really excited at the thought of being in the parade together.
“I was born in Spalding and haven’t missed a year. I want to do it for my nan.”
You could be part of history by being the last person ever to be crowned Spalding Flower Queen and take your place atop a magnificent floral float on Saturday, May 4.
To enter you need to be aged 17 or over, live in South Holland and fill in the coupon in Tuesday’s Lincolnshire Free Press.
Preliminary interviews will be at Tulip Radio on Thursday, March 7, and five finalists will be invited to a reception at Ayscoughfee Hall on March 15, where the winner will be crowned. Closing date is Thursday, February 28.
