Students and staff at Spalding Grammar School have been told it’s “business as usual” despite its conversion to academy status.

The school is set for a £670,000 windfall after opting out of local authority control to be funded instead directly from central government.

Academy status took effect from February 1 but the school’s name, uniform, admissions policy and terms and conditions for staff will stay the same.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Nigel Ryan said: “We have now had official confirmation that our conversion to an Academy went through successfully on February 1.

“While this change makes a difference to the way we have to interact financially with the Government, you should not notice any difference in terms of the way we work with you.

“Our values and ethos, structure and systems, terms, conditions and priorities for the future have not changed, so we anticipate continuing to work positively with you to provide the best possible all-round education in the area.”

Parents were told in a joint letter from Mr Ryan and chairman of governors, Rev John Bennett, last November that the school would get an extra £260,000 this academic year and £410,000 next year as an academy.

It will be spent on reducing class sizes, improving IT systems and widening the choice of subjects for students.

Rev Bennett said: “From the school’s point of view, it’s business as usual and we don’t expect there to be any obvious changes.”
