Holbeach Parish Council is under pressure to reverse a decision to axe its payment towards CCTV in South Holland for the next financial year.
The town’s three members on South Holland District Council showed a united front in calling for CCTV cameras to stay on in Holbeach during 2013-14 at a parish council meeting on Monday.
Couns Francis Biggadike, Martin Howard and Rita Rudkin said they were surprised parish councillors had chosen to “opt out” of CCTV in a bid to save £5,500.
Their call for a rethink comes a week before district council cabinet members are due to consider a report from a task group set up to look at the future of CCTV in South Holland.
Coun Howard, part of the task group along with Coun Rudkin, said: “I was rather surprised to learn that Holbeach Parish Council has chosen to opt out of CCTV.
“How can this be justified when it is a tool the police use to secure a conviction?
“To leave our town without CCTV is just advertising the fact that we have no deterrent, inviting crime and anti-social behaviour (here).”
Coun Rudkin asked parish councillors to meet with the task group to discuss its initial findings and possibly review a decision on axing CCTV in Holbeach for 2013-14.
She said: “Various people have come to us and said they’re not happy with the move to come out of the CCTV scheme (in South Holland).
“Is it possible for you to allow a meeting of your councillors with our task group so you can be more thoroughly informed of our findings and influence you to have another look?”
Coun Peter Savory, parish council chairman, said: “It’s a cancellation (of CCTV) for one year, but we’re not closing the door on it completely.”
