There are two sides to Duncan’s business: the sale of glass and craft items and the studio.
In the studio, Duncan carries out lampwork, where rods of glass are melted to make individual beads using a lampwork burner and oxygen machine. He also teaches lampwork, at hours to suit the client.
Duncan has carried out repair and restoration work nationally in Victorian houses in the past, but he is much more interested in making small items such as sun catchers and mosaics, and in teaching stained glass working.
“It’s all about the teaching,” says Duncan. “You get a student who has never cut a piece of glass and in the first two hours they have cut and made a small piece.
“They get 16 hours all together and by the time they have done eight to ten hours they are making a big project, such as a panel.”
Duncan also allows experienced glass workers to come into the studio and rent the equipment.
