A man who forgot to remove a knife left in his car by a friend was handed a suspended prison sentence by magistrates on Tuesday.
Ryan Fewkes (24) pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to having a knife with a blade about six inches long in a public place, Commercial Road, Spalding, on January 16.
Spalding magistrates heard the knife was left under the front passenger seat by a friend and it was found during a police search.
Presiding magistrate Ann Harrison said: “Mr Fewkes, the bench has considered this very carefully.
“We do feel that the only way forward is to make a suspended prison sentence.
“We are making this order because of the fact that this was a particularly dangerous weapon and this offence was committed while you were already on a supervision order.”
The 12-week sentence will be suspended for a year.
Magistrates ordered destruction of the knife and told Fewkes, of Sandringham Walk, Spalding, that he must pay £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
Edward Johnson, prosecuting, said police came across a BMW with its engine running and parked on yellow lines outside a convenience store.
Fewkes came out of the shop and confirmed it was his vehicle.
Mr Johnson said the officer had reason to search the vehicle and found the knife under the seat.
In interview, Fewkes indicated a friend had placed the knife in the car – he knew it was there and was going to remove it, but had forgotten to do so.
Solicitor Mike Alexander, mitigating, said: “This case was born out of not thinking rather than wanting to have some criminal behaviour.”
