‘Talk to us’ say Samaritans

Middle-aged men in South Lincolnshire are shouldering the stresses and strains of modern living better than in other areas of the county.

Samaritans say men in their 40s and 50s in deprived areas of Lincolnshire are ten times more likely to end their own lives.

Boston area coroner’s officer Jim Bradwell said his records did not support the claims.

He said: “I can’t see it. If anything the number of suicides in the area is down and there is no specific age or sex.”

However, there is still concern from the Samaritans that men most vulnerable to suicide aren’t asking for help.

A new campaign ‘We’re In Your Corner’ has been launched nationwide.

Guy Roberts, Samaritans’ press officer, said: “The group at risk are middle-aged men.

“They were not brought up to talk about their problems – you could call it the British stiff upper lip.

“What we are saying is ‘call us’. You’ve got to talk about it. By sharing a problem it can help you look at ways to change your life.”
