Two feathered friends are feeling chirpy after housing experts were scrambled to find them a new home.

The housing team at South Holland District Council are skilled at sorting out the accommodation needs of their human clients – but faced a new kind of challenge when called upon to find a new home for a goose and a cockerel.

So they resorted to that birdie favourite – Twitter – to give them a helping hand.

Within hours of putting out a plea on the social networking site for someone to take in the birds, someone had come forward and they are now settling in to their new surroundings – where else but Crowland?

Proud new owner, 16-year-old Mia Speechley said: “I couldn’t see these birds fall ‘fowl’ of the council’s regulations, so, not wanting to duck the issue, I was pleased to put the bunting out and give them a new home where they can lark about with my chickens, dogs, cats and pony.

“I am sure they will have nothing to grouse about.”

South Holland District Council was called upon to find new homes for the goose and chicken after their owners were relocated to new accommodation that was not suitable for their two feathered friends.

An appeal was posted on the council’s new Twitter feed and received the quick-fire response.

Coun Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for communications, said: “I am delighted to say we have managed to find new homes for the goose and cockerel.

“It is certainly worth
having a gander at our new Twitter account as this has given us something to crow about.

“A cockerel normally lets you know it’s about but it was our new Twitter account which helped sound out the plight of these birds.

“They could have been for the chop if there hadn’t been any takers but I’m pleased to say they can now look forward to a brighter future – in Crowland of all places.”

Portfolio holder for housing Coun Christine Lawton said: “Our staff work very hard and go that extra mile to help our tenants.

“We pride ourselves on the service we give them and in this case we even found a new home for the two additional members of the household.”
