Weekend curfew for banned driver

A banned driver took a risk and drove to work the day a colleague had to take his wife to hospital and couldn’t give him a lift.

Police spotted Marek Sowa (50) on the A52 at Donington on February 22 and a police national computer check showed there was no insurance held on his Renault Laguna.

John Clare, prosecuting, said police stopped Sowa, who gave his correct details, and a further check showed he was a banned driver.

Mr Clare said Sowa was disqualified for 23 months last October for drink-driving.

Spalding magistrates heard on Thursday that Sowa is unsuitable for unpaid work as he already has a 60-70 hour working week.

The court sentenced Sowa to Saturday and Sunday curfews for three months and he must remain at his home in Fossitt Place, Kirton, between 4.30pm and 4.30am on those days.

Sowa pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and using a car without an MOT.

He received no separate penalties for the insurance and MOT offence.

Sowa must pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Solicitor Daven Naghen, mitigating, said Sowa was normally taken to work by a colleague.

Following his ban, Sowa had intended scrapping the car.

He said: “The temptation was there and he succumbed to temptation.”
