Alternative cattle feed needed

Investigating alternative sources of protein for use in livestock feed is crucial, according to Richard Weightman of agricultural consultancy ADAS.

He says agriculture’s reliance on imported protein is environmentally detrimental and expensive.

The EU imports about 30m tonnes of soybean meal or equivalent protein each year, often from parts of the world where land clearance contributes to climate change.
