A new charity cafe has been set up to help maintain a village playing field.

Hockey and football players and their family and friends who watch from the sidelines at Glen Park, Surfleet, can warm up after a chilly weekend session by popping along to the nearby village hall where hot soup and fresh bread are on offer.

The Barefoot Bistro and Bakery has been set up by Fran Healands, a member of the village hall committee, who is keen to raise as much money as possible to pay for maintenance of the field and the children’s play equipment.

She is being helped by volunteer Vanessa Cooper and between them they are cooking up a real treat every Saturday and Sunday.

Fran said: “We have been trying to get funding for the park but I was tired of just sitting around waiting for something to happen so I decided I needed to do something myself.

“We are doing ethical food, with ingredients sourced locally.

“At the moment, while the weather is cold we are doing lovely warming soups, such as leek and blue cheese or carrot, chilli and coriander, then in the summer we’ll look at other things.

“We have just done our third weekend and the cafe is proving popular, particularly on Saturdays.

“As well as raising money ourselves I also hope the cafe raises awareness that the field and play area need maintaining so that it can continue to be enjoyed by our children.

“We need to prove to the bigwigs that the project needs support.”

The cafe is open at the village hall on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
