The best friend of one of the girls who tragically died in a car crash just after Christmas is helping to raise cash for a memorial bench in their honour.

Jazmine Callaby (11) and her mum, Tracy, are organising a fundraising family disco in memory of Tamzin (10) and Jessica Portor (7) from Sutton Bridge who died when the car they were travelling in overturned on the A47 near Wisbech last December.

The disco is being held at the school all three girls attended, Westmere Primary School, Anne’s Road, Sutton Bridge, on April 13 at 7pm.

It is hoped that enough money will be raised from the disco and donations from businesses in the area for the bench which will be placed in the village cemetery at St Matthew’s Church.

Mrs Callaby, who runs a shop on Bridge Road, Sutton Bridge, said: “My daughter was best friends with Tamzin and the girls would have left school together in July.

“Jazmine isn’t too bad emotionally when she’s at home but when she’s at school, it’s hard because she used to sit next to Tamzin and they did lots of things together.

“We’re organising the disco because Tamzin liked music and we’re hoping to sell lots of chocolate because Jessica loved it.”

Several businesses in Sutton Bridge have donated cash towards the bench and Mrs Callaby is hoping more than 200 people will come to the disco.

She said: “We’ve sent letters to about 30 different companies in Sutton Bridge and the surrounding area, asking them to help us put on the disco.

“Tamzin and Jessica’s family has also supported us because they know how much the girls respected each other and after the disco, Jazmine can start to move on.”

Tickets priced £2.50 or £10 for a family of five are available from the Fresh Choice store on Bridge Road or Suzanne Butcher on 01406 351281.
