Bike service saving lives thanks to Smile cash

Lives could be saved thanks to the latest donation handed out from the Smile Fund.

After a successful evening at this year’s Spalding and District Round Table Club ball, the group made a massive £8,000 donation from the fund to buy one of Lincolnshire’s first emergency blood bikes.

The bike, which has been given the name Shy Brian, will be used by the newly-formed Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bikes Service to rush blood, drugs and other medical requirements between hospitals and blood transfusion banks in the county – potentially saving lives.

Currently, any out of hours emergency transport of blood-based products or drugs is carried out by expensive courier services.

But the volunteer-led out-of-hours service provided by LEBBS , which hopes to have five bikes and one 4-wheel drive vehicle on the roads all year round, would be free – saving money for the NHS.

After hearing about the new charity’s aim, Spalding and District Round Table found the money to buy one of the bikes, equipped with emergency lighting and able to carry emergency blood boxes.

Members of Spalding and District Round Table officially handed over the keys to the new bike to LEBBS representatives in Spalding.
