Friends of the parks in Sutton Bridge are bidding for £10,000 Lottery cash to create a free outdoor fitness centre.

But they need the support of the village in order to make the scheme a runner.

Shirley Giles, chairman of Friends of Sutton Bridge Playing Fields and Open Spaces, said the group isn’t asking for money but needs expressions of support from residents so it can prove to the Lottery’s Awards for All that there is a demand.

She said: “We are hoping to start off with ten grand, which will buy us about four pieces of equipment.

“There’s only seven of us in our little group. We don’t want to ask people for money, to be honest, because round here they haven’t got much in their pockets.”

If people in the village want to get fit, they are faced with a 12 mile journey to King’s Lynn, travel costs and gym fees when they could have something just as good on their doorstep.

The group has approached Pennine Outdoor Fitness, which has a range of ‘Alfresco Fit’ equipment like dual air walkers, hip stations and shoulder stations, and they want to site the kit in the Memorial Field along a strip of land between the railings and the pavilion.

Mrs Giles (73) says there is a lot in the news about obesity. Keeping fit can cut the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

She said the equipment will be suitable for adults and teenagers, but younger children would need supervision to use it.

Mrs Giles has an artificial knee and walks with a stick, but is game to give the outdoor gym a go if it’s built.
