A PART-TIME gravedigger has been electronically tagged after punching a man during a fracas at the end of a night out.

After leaving a nightclub, Adam Watts (21) and his cousin found themselves in an area of Stamford where police were attending to a disturbance, Spalding magistrates heard on Thursday.

The court was told Mr Watts was approached by a man who accused him of hurting him with his cigarette, which Mr Watts denied as he did not smoke and he and his cousin moved away with the intention of getting in a taxi to go home.

But as they did so, the same man approached Mr Watts’ cousin and punched him. The man was arrested and as he struggled with the police officer, Mr Watts punched him twice, with only one punch connecting.

Mr Watts, of Millfield Road, Deeping St James, admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke fear of unlawful violence.

In mitigation, Julie Murtagh said: “He went out that night, November 19, and he was not looking for trouble.

“He can’t really explain what happened, it was an impulsive act and he has shown remorse.”

Magistrates imposed a three-month curfew on Mr Watts, meaning he will be tagged and must remain at his home address from 7pm to 7am each day.
