THE building which is home to Holbeach’s delivery office has been sold.

Union representatives have expressed their disappointment at the news, which was given to staff at the Barrington Gate office earlier this week.

The sale has been branded as a “victory for bureaucracy” by parish councillors, who had backed the fight to keep the office in Holbeach.

Royal Mail intend to move its operations to Spalding next summer.

However, Andy Beeby, branch rep for the Communication Workers Union has vowed to fight on and deliver the hundreds of signatures and postcards collected in support of the office.

He said: “We are extremely disappointed in Royal Mail because they met with parish councillors and John Hayes MP a few weeks ago and promised they would not do anything until they had met with Mr Hayes again in January. Now lo and behold, it’s sold.

“We are still committed to fighting the closure for the benefit of the local community and the quality of service.”

Royal Mail spokesman Valerie Antoine said talks are ongoing with staff and union reps about the transfer. She said the interests of customers are also “top priority”.

She said: “The move is part of Royal Mail’s business-wide investment and modernisation programme and in response to falling mail volumes.

“We believe that relocating to nearby Spalding will provide improved working conditions and new equipment and a more cost effective operation.

“As part of the planning for this office relocation, we can confirm that the Holbeach delivery office site has been sold.

“Releasing value from assets we no longer need helps to fund our major business modernisation programme.”
