A MUM leapt into the pond at Ayscoughfee Gardens to rescue her baby after a pram rolled into the water with the infant inside.
A man who helped at the scene said: “The pram rolled in with the baby in it and the mum and gran jumped in to get the baby out and I got the pram out.”
The man was in the Spalding gardens with his son and they were feeding the ducks when they heard a splash.
The dad looked up and saw the mum already coming out of the water with the baby in her arms and gave her a helping hand by reaching over from the bank to pull out the pram.
He said: “Obviously they were in shock.
“I don’t know what happened afterwards. I think they got the baby away quite sharpish.
“I am sure they are still having nightmares.”
The accident happened at about midday on Thursday. The gardens were busy at the time as people enjoyed the unseasonably good weather
South Holland District Council is now investigating the incident.
A spokesman said: “At present we have no first-hand accounts of what exactly happened and will be continuing our inquiries.
“In general we would urge all parents and guardians to safeguard children in their care, especially close to obvious hazards such as water.”
