Running a butcher’s shop has been a way of life for Brian Frisby.
He has been managing his shop in Moulton Chapel – Brian Frisby Butchers – for the past 45 years. Before that, he was employed there by someone else for five years.
“I am coming up for my 50th year and I am looking to pack up in a year or so because I have been tied to this place all that time,” says Brian.
Brian, who would like more time for cycling and gardening, admits it’s unusual for such a small village to have its own butcher’s shop.
He said: “Moulton Chapel is unique in having this shop, the garage and two pubs. Not many villages have got even one pub nowadays, so it is unique really.”
There have been changes over the years, and people are more likely now to want to know where Brian gets his meat from – it comes from Weston farmer Chris Bustance. The handmade cakes and pastries he sells are made locally.
Despite people’s diets moving away from meat, Brian has continued to make a living from the shop for himself and his family.
The meat lover says: “It’s been really good. I have enjoyed it. It’s friendly and I have personal contact with people. You don’t get that in lots of the big shops.
“I shall try to move it on because it would be a shame to see it closed after all these years.
“It’s been a way of life for me. I only live across the road so every day I walk across here from home, so it will be strange, but I can’t keep going for ever.”
