Gnome, sweet gnome

Where do garden ornaments go when they are made gnomeless?

It appears the answer is Spalding’s Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Visitors may have noticed a growing line-up of unwanted and dumped gnomes, fairies, frogs and squirrels – as well as other various animals and garden statues.

The concrete army has been growing over a number of months as people have cleared out their unwanted garden clutter.

Staff at the recycling centre sort them and the good ones are put into groups and sold at auction as job lots.

The ones that are beyond rescue are broken down and used as hardcore for new buildings.

Ian Taylor, environmental services team leader at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “I think it’s a real miss-gnomer why people throw away perfectly good garden ornaments like this, but each to his gnome I guess.”
